How to pick a career?

Prompt questions 2: what are my strengths?

Think beyond simply your skills. It's perfectly possible to be good at something without enjoying it, just as it's possible to enjoy something without producing good results.

A strength is defined as 'a pre-existing capacity for a particular way of behaving, thinking, or feeling that is authentic and energising to the user, and enables optimal functioning, development, and performance' (Linley 2008). Put another way, a strength is the overlapping portion in the Venn diagram of what you're good at and what motivates you.

Some questions to ask yourself

  • When was the last time you felt that you were really at your best?
  • What did you do right in that situation?
  • What about that situation enabled you to be at your best?
  • What are you like when you're at your worst?
  • What causes you to feel that way?
  • How do others describe you at your best? (If you don't know, you might have to ask them!)
