Cambridge engineers enjoy excellent career prospects. Below you’ll find brief information about the career destinations of previous students which we hope will give you an insight into the wide range of work and further study options Cambridge engineers pursue after they graduate.

Career options and destination

Many Cambridge graduates go into manufacturing, the utilities and energy sectors, whilst others join high technology businesses. Consulting, financial services including investment banking and the IT sector attract good graduates whilst some join ‘start-ups’. Others join the uniformed services or work in the social, community and charity sectors. Some continue with their studies pursuing doctoral research at home or abroad whilst others undertake various taught postgraduate courses. Course structure and professional engineering accreditation

The undergraduate Engineering course normally lasts four years and leads to the degrees of BA (Hons) and MEng. More information on the course structure is available on the Department of Engineering's website. If you aspire to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng) - the highest status in the profession - then prior to commencing a professional development programme you must have studied an accredited course. The MEng courses at Cambridge are fully accredited through the UK Engineering Council by the major engineering Institutions including the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Keeping your options open - developing skills through your course

Apart from gaining the broad scientific and engineering background and in-depth knowledge, throughout your course there are many opportunities to develop a variety of valuable transferable skills such as team working, applying problem-solving strategies, developing a creative approach as well as working to improve those all-important skills in written and oral communication. In addition, students of engineering have the opportunity to improve and or learn new foreign languages within the department. Some have the opportunity to take part in the student exchange programme and spend their third year at another leading university.

Meeting employers

There are many opportunities to meet employers. Unless they have prior relevant experience, first year students are required to undertake a period of industrial experience during their first summer vacation. Students are helped to find appropriate work by the Industrial Experience Coordinator, based in the Department, who maintains a large database of employers and jobs. Gaining appropriate work experience will not only help you to continue learning but will also improve your longer term employment prospects.

The Careers Service organises many careers fairs during the academic year. For example in the Michaelmas term students can attend the Engineering, Science and Technology Event which attracts approximately seventy employers; the event for mathematicians held in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and the internship event. The Engineering Society (CUES) holds a careers and placements fair also in Michaelmas. Later in the year, students are able to meet representatives from local high-technology firms at Cam Connect and the Summer Recruitment Fair. In addition, students can meet employers via the extensive lunchtime and evening employer presentation programme and careers skills programme. The course offers many opportunities for students to meet employers through visits and project work.
