Santander Universities SME Internship programme

Internship programme to help fund work experience in start-ups or SMEs (small- to medium-sized enterprises).

Programme outline

  • All final year Cambridge students (undergraduates or postgraduate students) and recent alumni (graduated 2017 or 2018) are eligible to apply.
  • Funding is available for internships between 2 - 10 weeks in length.
  • Interns must source their own internship, either through the Careers Service vacancy listings or independently.
  • Organisations must be registered in the UK and have fewer than 250 employees and less than £50m turnover. Limited companies, franchises, social enterprises, UK subsidiaries, partnerships and charities are all eligible.
  • Organisations are encouraged to advertise vacancies on the Careers Service website.
  • Interns are paid £300 per week for placements between 2 and 10 weeks. Half of this is paid by the SME and half by Santander.
  • All placements are based on a standard 35 hour week, although part-time roles are acceptable.
  • Internships can last longer than 10 weeks, but funding from Santander is limited to the first 10 weeks.
  • Interns have to submit a short written report at the end of their internship.

After receiving an internship offer from an SME, students/alumni and their new employer should contact the Cambridge Judge Business School at to find out more and apply. Applications should be submitted to the Judge Business School a minimum of 4 weeks before the start of the internship.
