Alternative Careers to Consultancy - Michaelmas 2020

This series breaks consultancy down into interests, skills-set required and work culture and explores alternative careers that you can consider as an alternative to the ferocious consultancy recruitment period. This series covers:
  • Alternatives to consultancy
  • Example job titles, sectors and skill-sets
  • Exploring your career anchors (core values, drivers and ambitions)

Why watch this series?

Consultancy is a popular career choice for those leaving Cambridge and entering into employment. Its popularity paves the way for competition and a funnel neck of applications vs positions available. Depending on the parameters of your career decision making (salary, location, skills and use of degree) you may have, thus far, limited your job applications to consultancy. You may have also had limited success in your applications and thus, it’s time to think again.

This panel provides insight on what the day-to-day work is like, and answer questions such as: Will you make direct use of your academic knowledge and training? What are typical projects and how do consultants work with clients? How can you make the transition from academia, and how do technical and scientific consultants go on to develop their careers in the longer term?
