Presentations and networking events are most effective for organisations with established brand recognition.

However, student feedback suggests that in-person, recruitment-focused presentations are among the least effective employer engagement activities. Before committing, consider whether promoting your opportunities via Handshake or participating in skills sessions, panel events, or other educational activities might be more effective.

We encourage you to discuss your plans with the Employer Engagement Team, who can help explore the best options for your goals.

Who benefits most from presentations?

Presentations can work well for organisations with strong brand recognition that want to convert student interest into quality applications.

If your brand is less well-known or you offer niche opportunities, Employer 1:1 sessions may be a more effective alternative.

Purpose

Cambridge students have demanding schedules, with short, intense 8-week terms. To attract attendance, your presentation must provide clear value.

Popular formats include:

  • Sector insights from experienced professionals
  • Personal career journeys from recent alumni
  • Interactive networking opportunities

Clearly communicate the unique benefits of your session in advance. Keep your presentation concise—we recommend a maximum of 90 minutes.

Tip: Academic commitments can impact attendance. Improve turnout by organising your presentation early in Michaelmas or Lent term. An evening event may result in a higher attendance.

Representation

Your employees are your best ambassadors. Students value hearing from recent alumni who can share their experiences of transitioning from Cambridge to your organisation.

To create an inclusive environment, ensure diverse representation in your lineup.

Promotion

To maximise attendance:

  1. Post on Handshake at least three weeks in advance with a clear description of the event’s value.
  2. Use a registration list via Handshake or your platform (please inform us of numbers
    if using your own system).
  3. Send a targeted email to reach potential attendees.
  4. Send pre-event communications & reminders to boost attendance.
  5. Ensure your representatives at other events (e.g., at career fairs) are aware of your presentation—consider using a QR code for easy sign-up.
  6. Engage Cambridge-based connections (e.g., relevant societies) to promote your event.

For on-campus events advertised on your own platforms, please specify that attendance is exclusive to Cambridge students and recent alumni.

Promotional Giveaways

Sustainability is a top priority for Cambridge students and the university. The most valuable takeaways from your presentation are knowledge, insight, and meaningful connections.

If offering giveaways:

  • Choose useful, recyclable, and ethically sourced items.
  • Avoid single-use plastics.
  • Reduce paper waste by opting for digital materials.

Catering Considerations

If providing catering:

  • Use a registration list to minimise food waste (note that turnout may vary from
    sign-ups).
  • Offer a menu accommodating most dietary needs, prioritising seasonal, plant-based options.
  • Avoid serving alcohol to ensure an inclusive event.
